Canister gas backpacking stoves are the clear frontrunner because they’re light, compact, easy to use, and fast. With canister backpacking stoves there’s no priming, pumping, or maintenance of any kind. Simply screw in your stove and light it up for a quick meal. But with backpacking woodstoves there are basically two types of wood stoves. Can based stoves, including wood gasifier stoves, and folding stoves that collapse flat for easy packing. Wood burning stoves also differ in the ease in which you can refuel them during a burn. With wood stoves it may be a better ideal for a longer hiking adventure through the woods.
